Asking questions
How questions become judgements, what they cost, the three layers of every answer, receipts, and pinning answers to a dashboard.
Ask anything about the coverage, in plain words. Typestream turns the question into judgements, runs them across the articles, and answers with a chart, a short explanation with citations, and the articles behind every point.
Where to ask
- The composer on Home.
- The composer at the foot of a subject's page, which asks about that subject.
- ⌘K (Ctrl K on Windows) from anywhere: type the question and press Enter.
Each question opens a chat. Chats are private to you until you share one: Share makes its link work for anyone in your organisation, read-only, and turning sharing off stops it at once.
Which subjects it's about
Typestream works out who a question is about, and shows them as chips in the composer. Type @ to add a subject, or remove a chip to leave one out.
How a question is answered
- Plan. The AI turns the question into what to judge for each article, how to group the results, and which chart to draw. It checks what's already been judged and picks the cheapest plan that answers well, and says so: "Reusing tone scores for 3,904 articles, so this costs 12 credits instead of 190."
- Approve, if it's over your limit. Anything under your organisation's auto-approve limit runs at once. Anything over it shows an approval card with the price, what happens, and how long it takes. Run a sample first answers from a few hundred articles for a fraction of the price.
- Run. A sampled answer arrives within seconds, drawn lighter. As the full run completes, the confidence band narrows and the chart settles.
- Answer. A chart or breakdown, and an explanation whose citations, like [1], open the article.
Dates, counts and amounts are never guessed by a model. They come from the articles' own data.
Every answer has three layers
- The answer: a sentence and a chart.
- How was this made?: under every answer. The scope in plain words, each question as a sentence, the counts at each step, what was reused, and the credits spent.
- Details: the exact questions asked, the thresholds, the model version, the run's id and cost, and every article's answers, with a CSV.
Receipts
Click any number, point, bar or table cell and a drawer lists the articles behind it, with the outlet and tier, the headline, a snippet, and what was judged about each article. The count at the top always matches the number you clicked. Open in Coverage shows the same articles with every filter.
What to do with an answer
Under each answer:
- Pin puts it on a subject's dashboard as a live card that recomputes as new articles are judged.
- Watch this turns it into a monitor. See Monitors and alerts.
- Show articles opens the receipts.
- Copy as an image or as text, and Export as CSV or PNG.
Follow-up chips suggest the next question, such as "Split by outlet tier". Follow-ups reuse the answers already in hand, so they're cheap: about 23 credits, against about 189 for a new question of 5,000 articles.
